Chapter One

Texas, 1959

When I pulled up to the largest Bank of America in San Antonio the media swarm was completely out of control. I suppose that is to be expected since Bank of America had just experienced one of the largest bank robberies in history. I had just stepped out of my car when I saw a group of men dressed in black suits approaching me. When they parted ways to reveal Mayor Ivy Taylor I knew that this robbery must be even bigger than the reporters had been made aware of at this point.

“Trent Owens, correct?” asked the mayor.

I leaned up against my car and crossed my arms over my chest as I took in the woman in front of me. Mayor Taylor exuded confidence, and authority.

“Yes, I’m Trent Owens. I’m guessing that it was you who called me in on this?” I gestured to the bank and all of the blue lights flashing behind the mayor and her bodyguard brigade.

“Yes,” said Mayor Taylor. “I don’t know if you were briefed yet, but it would seem that this is the work of Dayton Marshal.”

Now she had my attention. Dayton Marshal was the most notorious bank robber in decades. He was known for getting in and out of the bank fast. So far all of his robbery schemes had been failproof and no one had ever come remotely close to apprehending him. “I wasn’t aware of that ma’am, but that still doesn’t explain why you had your people contact me. Shouldn’t you be getting in touch with the FBI if the case involves Dayton Marshal? He is on their most wanted list after all.”

Mayor Taylor came closer so that she could speak low enough not to be heard by the prying ears of the media swarming all around them. “We think that catching Mr. Marshal is going to take a certain level of finesse. One which might be outside the scope of normal law enforcement agencies.”

Now things were starting to make sense. She wanted my help so that I could use my status as a bounty hunter to walk the fine line of the law that normal law enforcement officials wouldn’t be able to deviate from.

The mayor nodded towards a black SUV with heavily tented windows. “Care to follow us out of here Mr. Owens?” she asked, but she began walking away before I had the chance to respond.

Clearly, she meant for her question to be a rhetorical one. It didn’t matter to me; I would have said yes anyway. It had been a slow month, and if the mayor of San Antonio was asking me to take on this job, then I was sure it would be one that pays nicely. Not to mention that if I could catch the infamous Dayton Marshal my reputation would be set for life.
